Strangereal · July 2029 · Ten years after the Lighthouse War

Story & Setting

Wings of Theve is set in Strangereal, the fictional world shared across the entire Ace Combat series — a world that looks like ours but runs on its own geography, nations, and history. This entry takes place in July 2029, roughly a decade after the events of the Lighthouse War depicted in Ace Combat 7.

The setup

The Federation of Central Usea (FCU) — a state that absorbed most other nations on the Usean continent as member states in the years after the Lighthouse War — is suddenly invaded by the neighboring Republic of Sotoa. The attack is fast and overwhelming: Sotoan forces capture Theve, the FCU capital, within the opening of the campaign. What's left of the FCU navy is shattered, and civilians are displaced across a country thrown into crisis.

How you enter the story

You play a fighter pilot pulled from the sea by the FCU Endurance, an aging aircraft carrier long past its prime and withdrawn far from the front lines — its decks now crowded with refugees rather than a functioning battle group. It's from this unlikely, half-obsolete ship that your story begins.

Why it's called "Wings of Theve"

"Wings of Theve" is a name, not just a title — a legendary ace pilot tied to the FCU capital, used by the military as a symbol of hope to keep national morale alive. The twist Bandai Namco has confirmed: that legend was, in part, a story constructed to serve that purpose. When the pilot originally carrying that name — a character referred to asCope — is killed in action, you're ordered to assume the "Wings of Theve" identity and lead the squadron in his place, carrying a legend that was never fully true to begin with.

Where this is going, mechanically

This premise ties directly into the returning Ace Style system — how you fly and the choices you make as "Wings of Theve" shape both your pilot's identity and which parts of this legend become true. See ourAce Style System breakdown for how that mechanic works.

A regional parallel, by the director's own admission

Director Kazutoki Kono has said the antagonist nation's name and cultural identity were deliberately worldbuilt with real-world influence in mind — he's described Sotoa's portrayal as drawing from Iran. As with every Ace Combat entry, Strangereal politics echo real-world geopolitics without being a direct 1:1 mapping.
