Jan Cope — “Wings of Theve”
Jan Cope is the original bearer of the Wings of Theve identity and leader of Joker Flight. The FCU selects him for a manufactured-ace propaganda project because of his evasive flying, then the player is later forced to carry the legend forward.
The original Wings of Theve
The official roster identifies Jan Cope as the commander-rank leader of Joker Flight and the man given the single sign Wings of Theve. The legend presents him as a heroic ace and symbol of hope tied to the occupied FCU capital, but the official biography states that the legend was not real.
Cope was selected because he could survive: his exceptional piloting and evasive maneuvers made him suitable for a public figure whose continued appearances could support morale.
Jan Cope, Rex and the player
Bandai Namco’s official character page uses the name Jan Cope. PlayStation’s hands-on report refers to the original figurehead as Rex and says the player begins as his navigator before taking on the Rex callsign after the first mission. These official accounts describe the same original Wings setup, although the final game will establish how the names are presented in every scene.
The player is therefore not Jan Cope. The player inherits the public identity and the burden of keeping the manufactured legend alive.
Personality outside the cockpit
Cope is described as sociable and charismatic, an inveterate gambler who sometimes fails to pay his debts but remains well liked. That contrast supports the central story idea: the person behind the national symbol is flawed and ordinary, while the propaganda image is deliberately larger than life.
